Architecture design process & Methodologies

Architectural design process – Definition

Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object, system or measurable human interaction (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, business processes, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns). Design has different connotations in different fields (see design disciplines below).

Architectural design process – Methodologies

  2. 2:  the analysis of the principles or procedures of inquiry in a particular field

A lot has been said and written about the Architectural design process and methodologies, opinions vary greatly with in the designing community, be it Engineer, Architect, Draughtsman and other practitioners in the designing industry.

Our company’s methodologies is based on two main Architectural design process points – One being the client’s budgetary constraints or our clients design brief regardless of budget.

One always needs to know by which Architectural design process guidelines you will need to work with to satisfy your client’s needs. There is no point in designing a magnificent structure suitable to your client briefs, with great artistic flair which results in an unfeasible cost to the client.

Our practice seldom comes across clients with an open cheque-book and bottomless pit of money for their Architectural design process. Budget is always a primary concern in designing.

After ascertaining the clients needs with regards to number of bedrooms, be it for a Dwelling or a Cluster development, Flats or Hotels etc. number of bathrooms, entertaining facilities, lounge, dining room, Garage and Parking facilities etc. we then work to an estimated schedule of areas and revert those sizes back to the client’s original budget.

During the Architectural design process, if we see that the design will exceed the budget, we consult with the client as to methods on changing his aspirations or alternative architectural design work which may achieve the client’s brief to matches budget.

Once we have married design elements within the budgetary scope, then the fun part of designing begins.

We go through an Architectural design process of sketch plans, final design plans – at which time we create a 3-D model for better visualizations of the intended project, working out building Orientation (position relative to the sun), aesthetic views, property access and so on. The 3-D model also aids in the designing process for technical issues such as the concealment of drainage pipes, Rainwater down pipes, roof designs, head clearance space when working on staircases, the most ergonomic design kitchen layouts, bathroom space design, and the all-important storage/BIC units.

Finally we are able to produce a set of Council working drawings, from which we are able to extract further requirements as stated by the National building regulations and SANS 10 400 regulations, for energy efficiency calculations and fenestration requirements.

A good visual slide presentation of Architectural design process and methodologies, also known as “architectural design process ppt was done by: design for architectural and media student Luca Galli and Dr. Yasser Mahgoub, Associate Professor of Architecture and Coordinator of Master of Urban Planning and Design program.
